Filler page alert. Sorry but regular page has been delayed by remodeling work to my home. :)
This model is NOT TEXTURED YET and far from being finished.
This is a model I've been working on that comes in at the last scene. In the next book Off World is just that, off world and it will take place primarily in space.
Since the Acheron is too big to land on a planet, the Madeira will play a large part in the next book.

For an unfinished piece, the ship looks sleek and wonderfully alien.

I really need to go back and start from the beginning.

I can't wait to get it textured, it'll look 10 times better. But there is a ton of detail work before I get to that point.

TYVM! I've got a lot more done since I took these shots. Since then I've finished the cargo bay and cargo crane details and got about half the cockpit done. I still need to add the vtol and vectored thrust details and clean up the original mesh before I can start textures.

In the prologue Kaydee said that their max attainable speed was 1/10 the speed of light, .72 Au/h or 30k kps but it would take years to reach that speed in a straight line. When they refer to top speed of a warship they mean within one au and at a speed that they can still maneuver. In most cases that number is less than 2000 kps. The speed of this ship is a plot spoiler so we can't go there yet.

Madeira

Soooo, you had to call your warship "wood"? Any more phallic as a symbol and you would have fallen into parody

Madeira is an island off of Portugal, the model I used for the volcanic island at the center of the impact crater in Celebus.

Crew complement?

I understand there are plot reasons (and/or not wanting to take the huge amount of time to render 50 crew reasons) to have such a small crew, but in real life you probably wouldn't see that.
US Navy ships could probably fight with 1/5th or less their crew, but a larger crew lets the ship survive a lot more pounding and fight more effectively. It also lets you have multiple watches and duty sections, so you always have someone alert and well rested at each station, and you can send folks ashore/to the planet without losing the ability to fight.
Sorry to nitpick, great comic, just wanted to put a realism note so others don't get the wrong idea.

Thanks!

Rendering a large number of crew members isn't the reason. In fact in the final battle there are thousands of soldiers in one scene. You can't actually put more than a dozen or so high poly models in one scene but for characters at distance, you can can render small groups and put them on a 2d plane, then render the plane in the scene instead.

Every military vessel in this story is a completely autonomous drone (page 2) and even the largest carrier has a crew of 4; a commander/captain, an engineer, a weapon systems officer, and a navigator. The crew is actually the ship's tertiary back-up system.
